Kate Guertin, Author at Country Bank- Made To Make A Difference

At Country Bank, the spirit of giving is at the heart of everything we do, and this holiday season, our team has embraced the true meaning of community support through our Season of Difference. We’ve worked tirelessly to make a meaningful impact, benefiting local organizations and families across the region.

One of the highlights of this year’s Season of Difference was the Difference Makers event held last Wednesday evening at the Wight Barn in Sturbridge, attended by team members company-wide, where Country Bank’s difference makers came together to build 250 stuffed critters. These lovable toys will be donated ahead of the holidays to local children’s organizations, including the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), foster care programs, local hospitals, and schools, spreading joy to those who need it most.

In addition to the stuffed critters, our teams contributed to the spirit of giving by purchasing $10,000 worth of toys, all of which will be delivered to DCFS offices. These toys will help brighten the holidays for children in foster care and other vulnerable families.

But the generosity didn’t stop there. Country Bank’s difference makers purchased ornaments to celebrate Giving Tuesday this year, with the organization matching proceeds totaling over $1,500 and all proceeds equally benefitting local organizations Second Chance Animal Shelter, Springfield Rescue Mission to end homelessness, Hearts for Heat providing Fuel Assistance, Project New Hope benefitting Veterans and Sun Shine Village providing Autism Spectrum Services to the community.

Country Bank also provided $52,000 in donations to local senior centers, ensuring our older neighbors felt the warmth of the season. Our commitment to fighting food insecurity was highlighted by a $44,000 donation to local food pantries, helping families in need enjoy a holiday meal. Earlier this holiday season, our volunteers also teamed up with the United Church of Ware to prepare and serve a Thanksgiving meal to community members. It’s through these collaborations that we’re able to make a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors.

Finally, as part of our dedication to honoring our veterans, Country Bank participated in Wreaths Across America, placing wreaths at three local cemeteries in West Brookfield, Holland, and Ludlow. This touching tribute helped ensure that the sacrifice of our servicemen and women is never forgotten. You will also see Country Bank difference makers out in the community this December at Uxbridge’s First Night, Light Up Palmer, White Christmas in West Brookfield and more. Country Bank’s goal is to make a heartfelt and lasting difference throughout the areas of Central and Western MA we serve daily.

At Country Bank, we are proud to serve the communities that support us. This Season of Difference reflects our ongoing commitment to making a lasting impact, not just during the holidays, but year-round. Together, we are truly made to make a difference.

Trevor White

Ichthys IT Services, Inc.

Palmer, MA

“I moved my small business to the local area in 1996 and signed on with Country Bank upon my arrival.  CB’s services have been top shelf, every time, for all of these years.  Though they are certainly excellent with all of the technical aspects of banking, (e.g., loans, lines of credit, account access, etc.), that pales in comparison to the actual customer service and human interaction.  The team at CB are awesome to work with.  Whether in the branch or on the phone, they’re the best!  They are always pleasant and kind, very quick with their service, and extremely professional.  I cannot count how many times their team has gone out of their way to help me in difficult situations.  I truly believe that they are the best bank in the area and I consider it my banking home.  I highly recommend them.”

SHOULD I INCORPORATE MY SMALL BUSINESS?

When starting a business, most entrepreneurs focus heavily on perfecting their product or service and securing funding. However, they often need to pay more attention to a critical foundation: choosing the proper business structure. While many are familiar with the corporation’s ability to protect owners’ personal assets, other structures can also provide convenience and cost-effectiveness, particularly for smaller businesses. Two popular alternatives are a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and a Doing Business As (DBA) designation.

DBA: A Simple Start

A DBA, the simplest business structure, acts as an alias for a sole proprietorship or partnership. While it doesn’t offer personal liability protection, it’s relatively inexpensive to register. It may be a good choice if you’re starting with limited personal assets at risk. Many entrepreneurs choose a DBA to quickly and affordably establish a business name. As your business grows and you need more protection, you can upgrade your business structure to an LLC, which provides personal liability protection. This path allows for a smooth transition as your business expands.

LLC: Flexibility with Liability Protection

An LLC, on the other hand, combines liability protection with simplicity. This business structure shields the owner’s assets, like their home, car, and savings, from risk if the business faces legal issues or debts. The piece of mind an LLC structure offers is invaluable if you have personal assets to protect. LLCs also offer tax flexibility and fewer formalities than corporations, making them a popular choice for small business owners.

Making the Right Choice

Each business is unique, and choosing the proper structure depends on your current financial situation, risk tolerance, and growth plans. Speaking with a professional advisor—whether a lawyer, accountant, or financial consultant—can help clarify which structure best suits your needs. If you don’t already have an advisor, our team at Country Bank would welcome the opportunity to work with you. Our business banking experts can provide guidance or refer you to trusted professionals in the area. You’re not alone in this decision.

For those thinking of incorporating in Massachusetts, the Secretary of State’s website under the Corporations Division section is a valuable resource. It provides necessary forms and fees, as well as guidance on the incorporation process. Starting a business is a big step, and ensuring you’re set up with the right foundation can make all the difference in your journey.

As we approach Small Business Saturday, a special occasion encouraging us to shop locally and support small businesses in our communities, we must recognize these entrepreneurs’ significant role in our economy and culture. From charming boutiques to cozy cafes, small businesses are:

Why Small Business Saturday Matters

1. Economic Impact: Small businesses create jobs, stimulate local economies, and contribute to the tax base.

2. Community Connection: When you support local businesses, you invest in your community. These businesses often contribute to local charities, sponsor community events, and create spaces where residents can gather and connect. They also play a significant role in shaping our community’s unique identity and culture.

3. Diverse Options: Shopping at small businesses allows you to discover unique products often unavailable at larger retailers. By supporting local artisans and makers, you help preserve the diversity of goods and services in our community, offering a unique and exciting shopping experience.

How You Can Support Small Businesses

1. Shop Local: Continue shopping at local retailers, especially on Small Business Saturday. Create a list of your favorite local stores and check them out during the holiday season. Whether you’re looking for gifts, home essentials, or personal treats, there’s something special about purchasing from your neighbors.

2. Spread the Word: Word of mouth is powerful. Share your favorite small businesses on social media, write positive reviews, and tell your friends and family about the fantastic products and services you’ve experienced. Consider using hashtags related to Small Business Saturday to increase visibility. Remember to share your small business stories to inspire others to support local businesses.

3. Participate in Events: Many communities host events on Small Business Saturday to celebrate local businesses. These events could include local vendors setting up booths, live music performances, food trucks, and fun activities for the whole family. Attend these events, and encourage others to join you.

4. Engage Online: If you can’t shop in person, consider supporting small businesses online. Many local shops have e-commerce platforms where you can browse their offerings and purchase from the comfort of your home, ensuring that you’re still part of the local community, even from a distance.

5. Gift Cards: Purchase gift cards from your favorite local shops as presents for friends and family. This not only supports small businesses by providing them with immediate cash flow, but it also introduces others to the wonders of your community’s offerings, potentially turning them into regular customers.

6. Collaborate and Encourage: If you’re part of a community organization or a business network, consider collaborating with local businesses for events or promotions. Encourage others in your network to do the same.

By highlighting the importance of small businesses and taking actionable steps to support them, we contribute to a thriving local economy and foster community spirit. Please join me in celebrating and supporting our small businesses that are Made to Make a Difference for you, our communities, and their employees. Happy Small Business Saturday!

Mary McGovern, President& CEO of Country Bank has been honored by the Worcester Business Journal in their annual Outstanding Women in Business awards. The Outstanding Women in Business awards have long been one of WBJ’s hardest honors to win. Typically, more than 50 women are nominated for the award, and yet only 10-20% of those nominees are selected as winners. Many, many worthy professionals don’t make the cut, and each year brings another round of truly excellent nominees.

To win the award, the women have to be truly outstanding.

Now in its 16th year, the Outstanding Women in Business awards has evolved over time. It started a bit as a lifetime achievement award for women, at a time when the majority of those types of honors went to men. As that shifted, Outstanding Women in Business focused more on women doing great things at any point in their careers. This year, the criteria shifted slightly to be more comprehensive, examining each nominee on her professional achievements, community impact, ability to break the glass ceiling, and mentorship to other professionals, particularly women.

In addition to the profiles below, I invite you to celebrate this year’s amazing professionals at WBJ’s Outstanding Women in Business awards luncheon Oct. 22 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.

In the spirit of Small Business Week, Country Bank proudly salutes the backbone of our communities – small businesses. Our Retail Banking Officers embarked on a journey this month to connect with the heartbeat of our local economy – the small businesses that enrich our neighborhoods and fuel our prosperity.

Their mission was simple yet profound: to extend our gratitude, support, and admiration to the unsung heroes behind these businesses. With each visit, they didn’t just conduct transactions; they forged and strengthened genuine relationships, celebrated achievements, and shared aspirations.

Throughout their encounters, they witnessed firsthand the passion, resilience, and innovation that define small business owners. From family-owned cafes to artisanal boutiques, their dedication knows no bounds. They’re not just entrepreneurs; they’re dreamers, risk-takers, and community builders.

“I always enjoy stopping in to see my business customers during small business week.  They always mention how nice it is that Country Bank supports them in this way each year and how that is an example of true relationship building and community support,” shared Tracey Perry, Retail Banking Officer of our Wilbraham Banking Center.

At Country Bank, we recognize the invaluable contributions of small businesses to our local economies. They generate employment, drive innovation, and infuse our neighborhoods with character and charm. Their success is our success, and their prosperity is intertwined with the vitality of our communities.

As we engaged in face-to-face meet-and-greets, we didn’t just exchange pleasantries; we exchanged stories, ideas, and visions for a brighter future. We listened intently to their feedback, eager to tailor our business banking services to their evolving needs and aspirations.

Moreover, we put our money where our mouth is – quite literally. By purchasing gift cards from these establishments, we not only supported their bottom line but also encouraged our colleagues and customers to do the same. After all, every dollar spent at a local business is an investment in the heartbeat of our community.

“I truly enjoyed visiting local businesses each year! It isn’t just about buying gift cards but it is about connecting with the heart and soul of our communities! Together we can make a difference and ensure our communities thrive for years to come,” added Melissa Stefanowich, Retail Banking Officer of our Belchertown Banking Center.

But our commitment extends beyond mere transactions. It’s about fostering enduring partnerships, empowering dreams, and championing the spirit of entrepreneurship. Whether it’s providing flexible financing options, personalized advisory services, or innovative digital solutions, we’re here to be their trusted ally every step of the way.

Small businesses are not just economic engines; they’re the lifeblood of our communities. They embody the resilience, creativity, and spirit of possibility that define the American dream. And at Country Bank, we stand shoulder to shoulder with them, ready to champion their cause and celebrate their successes.

As Small Business Week draws to a close, let’s not just applaud these local champions; let’s continue to support, patronize, and uplift them throughout the year. Together, we can build stronger, more vibrant communities where small businesses thrive, and dreams take flight. Thank you for being the heartbeat of our neighborhoods.
